Tofu Tikka Masala

Tikka Masala is a popular tomato-based curry with marinated pieces of paneer/tofu/chicken that are barbecued and simmered in rich velvety goodness.


Are you someone who crinkles their nose at the sound of tofu? Well, my husband sure does. And this recipe passed the picky eater's test. So I think it is going to be a hit. Tofu to me is like an empty canvas that I can paint with whatever flavor I want and today, I am giving it the smoky, tangy, spicy, tart, tikka flavor!!



As a vegetarian, paneer is an indistinguishable part of my life. Recently, I am trying to move away from dairy, and tofu is trying to take the place that paneer always held and I guess it does come darn close in this recipe!



Along with this curry, I also skewered a few pieces of tofu with some peppers and onions marinated in the same marinade as the tofu and broiled it in my oven for some lip smacking tofu tikkas! God bless my soul!



 

PRINT RECIPE




Ingredients:

  • 1⁄2 block organic firm tofu pressed and cut into 1 inch cubes

  • 1⁄2 cup plant based yogurt

  • 1 tbsp roasted chickpea flour

  • 1 cup roughly chopped onion

  • 2 cup roughly chopped tomatoes (de-seeded)

  • 2 tbsp oil

  • 2 tsp Ginger, Garlic & Green chili paste (3G Paste)

  • 1⁄4 cup raw cashews soaked in hot water for 30 minutes

Spices:

  • 2 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1⁄4 tsp asafetida

  • 2 tbsp red chili powder

  • 4 tbsp coriander & cumin seed powder

  • 2 tsp turmeric

  • 3 tsp garam masala

  • 1 tsp raw mango powder

  • 1 tsp chat masala

  • 2 tsp kasoori methi

  • Salt as per taste

Directions:

Marinade:

  1. To a bowl take 1/2 cup yogurt, add 1 tbsp roasted chickpea flour, 1 tsp 3G paste, 1 tsp turmeric powder, 2 tbsp coriander & cumin seed powder, 1 tsp garam masala, 1 tsp raw mango powder, 1 tsp kasoori methi, 1 tsp chat masala and 1 tbsp oil and mix it until well-combined.

  2. Add the cubed tofu, coat them well and let them marinate for at least 3-4 hours preferably overnight

Tofu Tikka:

  1. To a griddle / foreman grill / Barbecue / broiler / simple skillet add a tbsp of oil and grill the marinated tofu until charred on all sides

Tikka Masala Sauce:

  1. To a pan on medium heat, add one tbsp oil, add 2 tsp cumin seeds and let them splutter, add 1⁄4 tsp asafetida, 1⁄2 cup chopped onions and cook them until translucent

  2. Add the 3G paste and cook it until the raw smell goes away

  3. Add the tomatoes and a pinch of salt to make the tomatoes cook faster.

  4. Add the soaked cashews, 1 tbsp red chili powder, 2 tbsp coriander & cumin seed powder, 1 tsp turmeric, 2 tsp garam masala and cook the mixture on medium low for 10 minutes

  5. Cool the mixture and blend it to a smooth puree.

Tikka Masala Curry:

  1. In a pan on medium heat, reheat and cook the strained gravy

  2. Stir in the charred tofu pieces and cover and let it simmer on low for 5 minutes

  3. Once oil separates, add water or non-dairy cream or coconut milk to adjust consistency

  4. Sprinkle 1 tsp of kasoori methi and turn off the flame

  5. Serve over a bed of rice or with any kind of Indian bread
